Running head: Journal Review of Exploring American Histories
I learned about the market revolution in Chapter 10. This involves the fact that I got to
understand why the US is referred to the “land of opportunities”. The authors, Hewitt &
Lawson (2019), assert that as economic expansion surged and transportation improved in the
Northern region of the United States in the 1820s, a large number of immigrants from Europe
immigrated into the country. The number of immigrants exponentially grew between 1820
and 1850. Most the immigrants were German, Irish, and Scandinavia by origin, who settled
along the eastern seaboard as well as inland towards the west. Furthermore, most of the
immigrants came into the US in search of greener pastures, whereby the Irish settlers, for
instance, moved out of the Ireland because of a potato blight, harsh weather, and cruel and
unkind economic policies enforced by the English government. Nevertheless, the
immigration of European settlers enhanced the market revolution as they brought in skilled
workmanship into the US, and thus played an important role in driving the US economic
As well, I learnt that the surging urbanization and immigration into the US in early
19th Century led to the establishment of stereotypic notions and bias. This involved racial
stereotypes as well as social stratification. Amidst the cultural erosion due to the increasing
confluence of cultures in the budding urban centers, new cultural ideals came up that
involved separating people based on the color of their skin so as to establish social classes.
Furthermore, socioeconomic classes were also established that divided people based on their
level of education, religious affiliation, job roles and sobriety.
Moreover, the role of women is shown to have been highly restricted, whereby the
responsibilities of women were centered on homemaking and child rearing. Women mainly
managed the household, while men were seen as providers through their work. Furthermore,
women and young ladies fueled economic development since they were the main consumers.
They are depicted to be shopping for various household items, such foodstuffs, clothing, and
accessories. Hewitt & Lawson (2019) assert that the link between their consumption and the
market was not obvious. Nevertheless, the increasing household demand due to increasing
immigrants and families in the US significantly increased economic development in the US
during the early years of the 19th Century….
